Abstract

319,246. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Heisler, C. L.). Sept. 18, 1928, [Convention date]. Film-feeding mechanism. - Mechanism for driving a sound-record film past the recording or reproducing device comprises a drum, an idler, and a driven member, the film passing over each of these members in turn. To prevent excessive tension in the film and, where the driven member is a sprocket, to eliminate irregularities in the driving action of the sprocket, the driven member assists in driving the drum through friction rollers. In the apparatus shown, which is for reproducing sound from a combined picture film and sound record, the film 1 passes over a drum 5, an idler roller 22, and a sprocket 20 which is driven uniformly by means such as an electromotor. A friction roller 21, secured to the sprocket, engages with a roller 23 fixed on the idler shaft 24, and the roller 23 also engages a friction roller 17 mounted on the drum 5. The roller 17 is in frictional engagement with the drum, and is so held by a nut 18 that no slipping normally occurs. The shaft 24 is carried by a jointed pivoted bracket 25, 26, controlled by an adjustable spring 28. With the arrangement described, the drum is driven jointly by the film and by a positive connection through the friction rollers with the sprocket 20. The dimensions of the rotating parts are so chosen that the idler has a peripheral speed slightly greater than the speed of the film thereon; thus the tension in the part of the film between the idler and the sprocket is diminished. Optical apparatus.-The drum 5 is made in two parts 6, 7, mounted on a shaft 8 and spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the width of the sound record 3 on the film. The part 7 is detachable. A narrow light beam is passed through the film on to a photo-electric cell 13, which is located within the drum. The cell is mounted on a bracket 14, surrounding a reduced part of the shaft 8 and supported by an arm 15 extending through the space between the parts of the drum.
