Oxygen. - Alkali peroxides, for example sodium peroxide or a mixture of sodium and potassium peroxides, in powder form, are prepared for use in respirators by heat treatment in the presence of a flux, such as about 1 per cent of caustic soda or potash, for about 1¢ hours until the mass is agglomerated without fusion, and by subsequent grinding or crushing of the agglomerated porous mass. The crushed product comprises a granular portion, and a fine powder which is separated and re-treated. The treatment may be facilitated by the addition of a catalyst such as manganese sulphate which may impart a characteristic colour to the final product. The flux may be formed in the material itself by absorption of atmospheric moisture, for example during an initial grinding process.
