Abstract

317,954. Johnson, A. F. July, 10, 1928. Sand and like distributers.-In a machine for scattering gravel, sand, &c. on roads and paths a rotary distributer is mounted beneath the hopper so that the sand &c. falling through an adjustable slot in the lower end of the front wall of the hopper is delivered on to rotating blades and thus spread over the surface of the road. The hopper e, mounted on a frame a running on ground-wheels b driven by the motor c, is fitted at the bottom with a rotary agitator f which directs the sand &c. through an adjustable slot h on to the blades of the rotary distributer p. These blades may be flat but are preferably curved so that the material is thrown outwards to some extent. Both the agitator and the rotary distributor are driven from the ground wheels through clutches by which the movement may be controlled. A lever i, which can be locked in any desired position on a toothed quadrart j, controls the sliding door g of the hopper through a connecting rod k and cranks m and o, and the projecting portion of this lever i<1> operates clutches 14, 15, controlling the motion of the agitator, through the cord or chain passing round the roller t to the pivoted lever r. When the lever i is pulled back to open the slot of the hopper the cord q becomes slack and the action of the spring s causes the clutches 14, 15 to engage. The same mechanism is employed to operate the clutches controlling the rotary distributer.
