Platen machines.-In a block-printing machine for printing marbled effects on linoleum of the kind in which a multicolour design is painted in squares and is mottled by pressure by a plain printing-block after the coloured impression has been produced, the mottling is produced by smooth blocks 10, Figs. 5 and 8, on a block 9 which is arranged near the last colour block 4, and is similarly operated. To prevent adhesion of the blocks 10 to the linoleum, which is fed forward intermittently by pins 11<a> on bands 11, a series of spring-depressed pins 16, which pass through the block 9, act on the unprinted parts of the linoleum and press it away from the blocks 10 as block 9 rises. In order to keep the blocks 10 clean, a taut wire 23, carried adjustably by posts 22 of a carriage 20, is reciprocated across the faces of the blocks 10 by means of links 7 similar to those which actuate the ink-applying rollers 6 for the blocks 4. To prevent the pins 16 from interfering with the passage of the wire 23, they are automatically raised above the level of the blocks 10 by means of a lifting plate 13 which is raised in a frame 30 by levers 33 actuated by engagement with rails 36 as the head 8 carrying block 9 is raised.
