Abstract
316,404. Millar, W. S. July 3, 1928. Grant of Patent opposed. Iron and lead, obtaining. - Oxide of iron, or material containing oxide of iron, is mixed with sulphur, sulphide of iron, or other material containing iron and sulphur and subject to the action of chlorine gas, or other gases and vapours containing chlorine, free or combined. Reactions such as the following will occur : 4Fe2O3 + 3FeS2 + 11Cl2 = 11FeCl2 + 6SO2 4Fe2O3 + 6S + 8C12 = 8FeC12 + 6SO2 4Fe2O3 + 3S2Cl2 + 5C12 = 8FeCl2 + 6SO2 The reaction may be carried out at any temperature above 200‹ C. but preferably 300-500‹ C. It is desirable to dry the materials before treatment. Excess of sulphide material mav be used, sulphur being obtained in addition. If excess of oxide is used this is not attacked. Non-ferrous metals present will be converted into chlorides. The mixture of ferrous and non-ferrous metal chloride may be dissolved in water, and pure ferrous chloride separated and electrolyzed for the recovery of metallic iron and chlorine. The mother liquor after the separation of ferrous chloride is freed from copper, if present, by precipitation on iron and from lead, if present, by electrolysis between electrodes at a potential of 1 volt or less. The liquor is then used for dissolving further anhydrous chlorides. Zinc, if present, will accumulate in this mother liquor, which is withdrawn and worked up for zinc recovery when sufficiently rich.
