Coating-machines.-A machine for applying glue or other adhesive to the backs of books, pamphlets, and the like is provided with a reciprocating book carrier which, in its movement in the forward direction, actuates means for moving a rotating glueing- roller into an operative position for applying the adhesive to the books &c. on the carrier, and at the same time actuates means for accelerating the glueing-roller. The book carrier 14, Fig. 1, comprises a subsbantially open frame with internal flanges 101, 102 against which the books are clamped or held by hand, and two wheels 15 on one side and a single wheel 17 on the other support the carrier on two longitudinal rails 12 along which it is reciprocated by a sun-and-planet mechanism operating a crank 19 and connecting-rod 18. The crank 19 is secured to a vertical shaft 20, Fig. 2, rotatably mounted in a collar 21 at one end of an arm 22 secured to a vertical driving- shaft 23 which passes through the axis of a fixed pinion 25 and a loose intermediate pinion 24 is mounted on the arm 22 so that it engages the fixed pinion 25 and drives a pinion 27 at the lower end of the shaft 21 when the shaft 23 and arm 22 are rotated. A bevel gear 28, Fig. 3, at the lower end of the shaft 23 is driven by a bevel gear 29 controlled by a pedal-operated clutch. The closing of the clutch causes the carrier to be reciprocated from the position shown in Fig. 1, and at the end of a complete oscillation, when the carrier is returning to its initial position, the clutch is disengaged by an arm 44 on the shaft 23 striking a roller 43 at the upper end of a lever 37 secured to the clutch, the shaft having then completed a single revolution. The glueing-roller 49 is journaled within a frame 45 supported by journals 46, 47 mounted on opposite sides of the machine frame. Mounted adjacent to the path of the book-carrier is an arm 57, Fig. 3, on a pivoted shaft 52 which carries arms 50, 51 respectively projecting inwardly beneath an arm 56 on the pivoted roller-frame 45 and an arm 61 on a pivoted shaft 62. Fig. 1. The shaft 62 carries arms 63 supporting a pair of brushes 65 disposed adjacent to the glueing-roller. During the forward movement of the carrier a cam surface 59 on the side thereof strikes a roller 58 on the rocker arm 57, thereby swinging the arms 50, 51 upwardly and lifting the glueing-roller 49 and brushes 65. The shaft 67 of the glueing- roller is driven by a chain-and-sprocket connection with the main shaft 30, a changeable gear train being interposed to accelerate the glueing- roller as it is lifted. Changing of these gears is effected by the movement of the rocker arm 57, which operates a clutch to introduce a pair of gears 77, 78, Fig. 1, the normal gears 71, 72 being rendered inoperative by the slipping of a friction-ratchet connecting the gear 71 to its shaft 70. The carrier is so arranged that the backs of the books are disposed obliquely relatively to the glueing-roller, which thus has a wiping action, the excess adhesive being removed by the brushes 65. To prevent the glueing-roller from being lifted during the return movement of the carrier the carrier-engaging roller 58 at the side of the rails is mounted on a short arm 96, Fig. 1, pivoted on the end of the rocker arm 57 and normally held against a stud 98 by a spring, so that on the return of the carrier the cam 59 on the latter causes the arm 96 to swing away from the stud 98 and clear of the carrier, A table 100 disposed beneath the loading position of the carrier facilitates the aligning of the books therein.
