Abstract
315,890. Peski, A. J. van. Jan. 18, 1928. Hydrocarbons are decomposed into unsaturated hydrccarbons containing fewer carbon atoms by heating in presence of sulphur, selenium, tellurium, arsenic or antimony or mixtures of such elements with compounds of the same elements, or compounds of sulphur, arsenic, or antimony, with or without a halogen or halogen compound, whether organic or inorganic. In an example, propane is passed at 550‹ C. over tellurium supported on pumice, the reaction being effected in presence of a very small quantity of iodine, the escaping gases containing about 16 per cent of unsaturated compounds, mostly ethylene; with tellurium alone the yield is 10 per cent, and with iodine alone 8 per cent. Specifications 2308/14, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and 264,827 are referred to,
