[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 17, 1929] Tobacco; smoking-mixtures. - Tobacco or a mixture of tobaccos is denicotined by a treatment not involving lixiviation and is then treated with an aromatic flavouring not derived from the raw tobacco. The nicotine may be extracted by heating above 150‹ C. in a rapid current of pre-heated air, gas, or dry steam, as described in Specification 290,204. In one example, a mixture of Virginia, Maryland, Burley, Java, and Latakia leaves is denicotined by the method described in Specification 290,204 and is steamed for a short time and the stems may be removed. The leaf is then sprinkled with an alcoholic solution of suitable essential oil, such as geranium oil. In a second example, a mixture of Virginia and oriental tobacco, after being denicotined, stripped and cut, is sprinkled with the aromatic flavouring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the denicotining may be effected by exposing to heat in a closed heat-insulated vessel, the air in the vessel being continually cooled and the temperature gradually increased from 150‹ to 185‹ C., the resulting vapours being condensed and removed. In the first example referred to, the tobacco, after denicoting, steaming, and stripping, was saturated with a solution of salt, saltpetre, and sugar containing an extract of dried plums, raisins and carob, and then dried, steamed, and cut, and sprinkled with an alcoholic extract of ground violet root, folia liatris, cloves, and musk. Other ingredients which could be used include dried pears, tonka beans, dried currants, and scenting materials such as clover flowers or cassia In the second example, the tobacco, after being denicotined, stripped, and cut, was sprinkled with a mixture of honey, " Glypho," and water and sprayed with an alcoholic extract of clover flowers and folia liatris containing a little geranium oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
