Abstract

314,999. Hirsch, Kupfer-und Messing- werke Akt.-Ges. July 6, 1928, [Convention date]. Induction furnaces.-In carrying out chemical reactions between solids, liquids or gases in a closed vessel A, the materials are agitated by electric-conducting bodies G placed in the vessel and caused to move by eddy currents generated in them by the action of an alternating current passed through a surrounding induction coil E. The heat generated in the bodies and the silent discharges which take place assist the reactions. Catalytic, photochemical and radiochemical effects may also be obtained. The inserted bodies are arranged to have about the same specific gravity as the mixture in the vessel. If the vessel A is of non-conducting material, conducting bodies in the form of aluminium stars enclosing floaters of glass, hollow nickel spheres with points, rings of rustless steel or silver ellipsoids may be used If the vessel is of conducting material, conducting bodies in the form of hollow spheres of iron with points each of which carries a glass head, cubes of iron enclosed in casings of quartz glass, or nets of platinum mounted on porcelain rolls may be used. The bodies may be formed of other catalytic metals such as cadmium or of oxides or sulphides. The reactions may be carried out under pressure or in vacuo.
