Abstract

314,646. Consortium fur Elektrochemische Industrie Ges., Herrmann, W.O., and Deutsch, H. May 14, 1928. Esters; acetaldehyde; phenol-aldehyde condensation products; acids.-Esters are prepared by reaction between a vinyl ester and an alcohol or phenol, preferably by heating together with a catalyst, such as sulphuric, phosphoric, benzenesulphonic, sulpho-acetic or other acid, and (or) an acid or neutral sait, such as mercury sulphate. Acetaldehyde formed in the reaction may be separated periodically or continuously, by distillation or other means. When using vinyl acetate and phenol, phenyl acetate and also a condensation product of phenol and acetaldehyde may be obtained. When using an aqueous alcohol, there is also produced the acid corresponding to the vinyl ester, and a larger quantity of acetaldehyde. The reaction may he carried out also by passing the vapours of the components over a heated surface. The alcohol or phenol may be monohydric or polyhydric and may contain an esterified hydroxyl group; mixed esters may also be prepared, such as glycol acetate-butyrate.from vinyl butyrate and glycol mono-acetate. The reaction may be carried out under increased or reduced pressure, and in the presence of indifferent gases, solvents or diluents. Examples are given of the preparation of ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and glycol diacetate.
