Abstract

314,455. Rice, C. S. Feb. 28, 1928. Theft alarms.-In a device for preventing the theft of motor vehicles, the falling of an object such as a metal ball from a position in which it is normally supported, consequent upon movement or vibration of the vehicle, is utilized to render inoperative the ignition of the engine. As shown, a metal ball 3 is supported by a recessed platform 2 in a casing 1, and is normally held in position by a dished plate 4 mounted on springs 6 and depressed by a lever 7 pivoted in the top of the casing. Contact strips 10<a>, 11<a> in the casing are connected respectively to earth and to the ignition magnets, and contact strips 10<b>, 11<b> to a battery and a horn or bell 13. When the lever 7 is thrown over to release the plate 4 from the ball 3, movement or vibration of the vehicle will cause the ball 3 to fall on the contact strips, earthing the magneto and completing the circuit of the horn 13. In a modification, for an engine having battery ignition, the ball falls on and tilts a spring-controlled pivoted contact-plate arranged to break the circuit of the induction coil and to close the circuit of a horn.
