Metals, depositing; electrodes, moving, supporting; cells; electrolytes, circulating, heating, and regenerating. - The transportable unit described in Specification 294,541 is modified by the provision thereon of a cover adapted to close the tank into which the cathode is introduced to prevent the escape of vapour therefrom. Smooth. ing tools may be provided but are not essential. In the apparatus shown a cylindrical cathode 3 is secured to a shaft 4 mounted in bearings 5, 6 in a carrier 15 on which is mounted the driving motor 11. Over the shaft 4 and separated therefrom by a water-seal 8a, is mounted the cover 7, a flange on which is adapted to enter a water-seal 8 on an annular cover 9, itself mounted in a water-seal 10 on the tank 1. Scrap anode material is disposed in the space surrounding a basket 2. The carrier 15 is lowered by a tackle between guides 13, 14 ; in the lowermost position contacts 17 engage stationary contacts 18 to close the electrolytic and driving circuits. The cathode is provided with insulating strips 3<a> in order that the deposit may be removable in segments. To prevent escape of vapour during changing of the cathodes the electrolyte is covered with several layers of hollow spheres of acid-resistant insulating material. The electrolyte is circulated through a filter 19 and an automatically-controlled heating tank 20. The acidity is maintained constant by inflow of fresh acid through an automatically-controlled device.
