Abstract

314,315. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Western Harvester Co.). March 19 1928. Thrashing - machines. - The header unit of a combined harvester and thrasher is supported OR a carriage associated with the header but a separate unit therefrom, and a draper is arranged to deposit on the ground in windrows grain cut by the header. The header, comprising a reel 21, knives 17 and a transverse conveyer 23, is supported by a frame 16 carried by an axle 6 of a ground wheel 8, the other end of this axle being connected to a carriage 48 that takes the place of the usual thrashing machine forming part of a combined header and thrasher. The rear end of the frame 48 is carried by a ground wheel 52 provided with grouters 59, the wheel revolving round a fixed axle 53 secured to the frame by blocks 54. The axle 53 extends from the frame 48 and is lashed or clamped to the axle 6 by U-shaped bolts 56 and spacers 57. Power is obtained from the wheel 52 by a sprocket 61 rotated by the wheel and driving a snap clutch 62 by a chain 63. A chain 64 extending from the shaft carrying the clutch 62 drives by means of a chain 64 a stub shaft 25 from which the reel 21 and knives 17 are driven and which is connected to the drive for the thrashing machine when the header is fitted on a combined harvester and thrasher. A lever 74 controls the height at which the header operates.
