Holders for loose types; embossing.-In a printing or embossing forme, particularly for use in " cutter-crush " machines, comprising bars for supporting the type or dies, the the bars or the type are formed with shoulders to provide ribs of less thickness than the bars to engage in slots in the type or the bars, the width of the slots being greater than the thickness of the ribs to permit of a limited movement of the type transversely to the ribs. As shown, bars 25, Fig. 2, are formed with ribs 29 to engage in slots in opposite edges of the type or dies 27. Clips may be provided to prevent endwise movement of the types on the bars, the clips consisting of split tubular members 32<a>, Fig. 10, a plate 30<a>, Fig. 9, with split and bentout ends 30b to grip the ribs 29 of a pair of adjacent bars 25, or a bar 30, Fig. 7, with shaped ends 31 to engage one side of the bars 25, and a spring 32 to engage the opposite face of the bars. The forme may be combined with a platen 10 on which the sheets or cards to be printed or embossed may be supported. For this purpose, the bars 25 are provided with hooks 26, Figs, 2 and 3, to engage bars 24 carried in brackets 21 secured to or integral with saddle bars 12 embracing flanges on the sides of the platen 10. The bars 12 have slots 14 engaging pins or screws 13 on the flanges to allow movement of the bars to and from the platen to facilitate the insertion of the sheets or cards. This movement is effected by bars 15 connected by a handle 19 and sliding between the bars 12 and flanges, the bars 15 having inclined slots 18 engaging the pins 13 and straight slots 17 engaging pins or screws 16 carried by the bars 12. The bars 24 are preferably of rectangular section and have grooves 24<a> to engage the sides of the brackets 21. The grooves in different faces of the bars 24 are of different depths so that by turning different faces of the bars towards the platen, the type faces may be held a little above the platen to provide space for the sheets or cards, or if the types are inserted face upwards and the sheets or cards laid upon them, the backs of the types may be allowed to rest on the platen. In a modification, the type bars 25 are arranged parallel to the bars 24, the ends of the bars 25 being clamped to cross bars secured to the bars 24.
