Chemical furnaces; discharging.-The decomposition of ferric or ferrous chloride with pre-- heated air or oxygen to produce ferric oxide and recover chlorine is effected in apparatus comprising, as shown in Fig. 1, a reaction chamber 25, a baffled settling chamber 27, discharging means 90 for ferric oxide, a twin regenerator 38, and a heat equalizer 48. Ferric chloride vapour or liquid or vaporized ferrous chloride is supplied through a pipe 37, preheated producer gas under pressure through a pipe 81 and tangentially arranged nozzles 79, and air, preheated by passage through the regenerator and heat equalizer, through annular passages surrounding the nozzles by injector action. Chlorine and other products of combustion pass from the chambers 25, 27 to the regenerator, and ferric oxide is deposited at the base of the chambers. Reversing valves are provided to admit issuing gases and incoming air alternately to the two chambers of the regenerator, the passages of which are smooth and of rectangular section, to admit of ready cleaning by means of tools inserted through normally covered holes 72 in the roof of the regenerator in alignment with the passages thereof. Means for removing ferric oxide and for freeing it from entrained chlorine may comprise, as shown in Fig. 4, an airtight casing 94, screw conveyer or like discharge means 96, star wheels 97 co-operating with a table 99 mounted on coiled springs 104 to control the rate of discharge, and pipes 105 for supplying dry air or inert gas to displace entrained chlorine upwards through the mass.
