Abstract

313,795. Pedersen, D. C. July 28, 1928. Implements with adjustable tool frames; rotary-tool implements; l if f t i n g and adjusting parts; motors, arrangement of. - In an engine-driven rotary cultivator the shaft for driving the cultivator is divided into two parts and is connected by a differential to a cardan shaft driven by the engine, the cultivator shaft also being divided into two parts driven independently from the two parts of the driving. shaft, so that either part of the cultivating-apparatus may be able to roll over an obstacle, while the other part continues its work. The implement comprises a fixed frame attached to an ordinary tractor as shown in Fig. 1 or forming the frame of a motor vehicle or machine as shown in Fig. 3. The fixed frame 3, Fig. 1, is attached to the tractor axle 2 and carries a post 9 supporting lifting-apparatus for the cultivating-apparatus. The divided driving- shaft 6 is mounted on a frame 7 hooked on pins 8 on the frame 3. The cardan shaft is driven from the axle 2 and drives the differential 5. The divided cultivator shaft 18 is carried by a frame 16 firmly attached to the frame 7, the two parts of the shaft being driven independently from the two parts of the shaft 6. The lifting- apparatus comprises a rack 11 sliding in a guide 19 and connected to the frame 16 by an arm 14 and a chain or link bar 15, the rack being moved and secured by means of a lever 12, a pawl 13, and a spring-controlled detent 12b. Harrow teeth 25 &c. are attached to a bar 24 carried bv arms 26 provided with pivot pins 27 movable in slots 28. The bar 24 may be raised and lowered with the frame 16 and may be indepenr dently adjusted vertically by means of a lever 20 on a rock shaft 19 carrying arms 23 on which the bar 24 rests. The arms 23 are connected by springs 32 to uprights 30 on the bar 24 to allow the teeth 25 to rise over obstacles. In the motor machine shown in Fig. 3, the fixed frame 3 is mounted on front steering wheels b and rear wheels 1 and carries an engine c and gear-box d. The cardan shaft is driven from the gearbox and is journaled in a frame 7 hinged to the frame 3 by pins 8 directly above the axle 2. which is carried by a frame f rigidly connected to the frame 3. The frame f carries a braced frame g supporting the lifting-apparatus for the frame 7 carrying the divided driving-shaft 6, the differential 5, and the cultivating-apparatus. The divided cultivator shaft 18 is driven from pinions 43 on the shaft 6 through spur gearing 60, 61, 62 In casings 63. The rear wheels 1 are driven independently from the pinions on the shaft 6 through spur wheels 44, short shafts 45, and chain gearing 46, 47, 48, the sprocket wheels 46 being connected to the short shafts 45 by ratchet clutches which allow of rotation of a wheel 1 when the corresponding part of the shaft 6 is stopped. The chains 47 pass over idle sprocket wheels 50 carried by angular frame members 49 slotted at the lower end to pass over pins 52 and provided with lugs 53 carrying adjustable setscrews 54 resting on the frame f. Lugs 55 on the upper ends of the members 49 engage under the frame 7, movement of which tightens or slackens the chains 47. The sprocket wheels 50 keep the parts of the chains between them and the sprocket wheels 46 approximately horizontal while the cultivator is at work in order to avoid vertical pull on the pivoted frame 7.
