Abstract
313,166. La Corsa, L. Ughetti-. June 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Tin, depositing ; cells; electrodes; treating after electrolysis; electroytes, agitating.-A cell for the electrolysis of tin salts holds only a small quantity of electrolyte and is provided with a rotating scraper for removing the tin deposited on a concave cathode. The cathode on the supports 1, Fig. 2, is provided with side troughs 3, 3<1> and is shaped to contain a semi-cylindrical electrolyte pit 2 the inside of which is made of or coated with iron. copper, tin, or lead. Suspended by transverse bars 7 from pivots 6 or from a through shalt is the anode 4 which may be a half cylinder of carbon concentric with the inner surface of the pit 2. Passages 5 in the anode 4 assist the circulation of the electrolyte. Keyed to the pivots 6 and rotating with them are two arms 8 on which is fastened an insulating bar 9 carrying in the rib 10 a blade 11 of resilient material such as rubber. To remove the tin deposited on the cathode, the bar 9 is rotated in any desired manner by a handle or by an electric motor through gearing so that the blade 11 scrapes the tin from the pit 2 and lifts it to the edge where it is removed and collected, if desired, in the troughs 3, 3<1>. The pit 2 may be hemispherical or in the shape of half of an ellipsoid, the anode, if solid, then having a similar shape, and the member 9 being constructed to rotate in the space between the two electrodes. In a modification, Fig. 3, the anode 4' of conducting material such as carbon in the form of. a cylinder with transverse passages 5 rotates on a square shaft 16. Along a generatrix of the cylinder forming the anode is fastened a bar 13 of insulating material carrying a rubber blade 11 and having at its two ends extensions 14 projecting in the direction of rotation. The bar 13 is preferably provided with a rounded face 15, as shown, so that material collected by the blade 11 when the anode 4<1> is rotated falls down more readily. The anode may consist of a frame or it may be replaced by receptacles containing the material from which the tin is obtained.
