Abstract

311,889. Bailey, F., and Jackson, F. H. April 2, 1928. Regenerators.-In a heat exchanger of the regenerative type, the grid exposed to heating and heated fluids alternately, e.g. hot waste gases and air for combustion, is composed of strips of corrugated or accordion-pleated metal a and of flat metal b, arranged alternately, and wound spirally into disc form so that the strips are presented edgewise to the passage of the gases. As shown in Fig. 3 the pleatings are oblique to the length of the strips and those of adjacent discs are of opposite inclination. The edge of one corrugated strip may be arranged to overlap slightly the edge of the adjoining strip; or the underlying flat strip may be formed with " nibs " b<1>, Fig. la, pitched to correspond with the corrugations. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the grid is stationary and the hot gases (entering at e and leaving at e<1>) and the air (entering at f and leaving at f<3>) are directed through continually changing portions of the grid by rotating sector-shaped boxes f<1>, f<2>. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the grid rotates and the two streams of fluid are separated by a sector-shaped partition g. The two forms may, however, be reversed in function, making the boxes stationary and the grid rotary in Fig. 3, while in Fig. 6 the grid would he fixed and the partition g would oscillate through a wide angle W.
