Filling granular materials into containers. - In apparatus for conveying powdered or granular material from bulk and delivering it in measured quantities into a container, the material is fed from a container 20 onto the upper portion of the periphery of a rotatable flanged drum 1 and is carried thereby towards a hopper 69 for delivery into a container 56. The thickness of the layer of material on the drum is determined by a compressing roller 40 and an adjustable scraper 45, and a predetermined quantity of this material is scraped off the drum by a scraper 55 which moves, when scraping, faster than the peripheral speed of the drum. The machine is driven by a chainwheel 9 which is connected to a shaft 6 by a sliding clutch 13 operated by rod 15 and handle 17. The drum 1 is driven by a worm 5 and worm-wheel 7 and skey-gears 30, 31 drive a shaft 29 from the shaft 6. A chain wheel 28 drives, by a chain 26, a chain wheel 27 connected to a shaft 24 provided with agitating rods 25 which rotate, between rods 32 projecting from the sides of the container 20. The shaft 29 drives the roller 40 by a chain 39 and a gear wheel 63 drives a similar wheel 64 connected to a shaft 61 on which a crank arm 60 is mounted. This crank arm is slotted at 59 to adjust the stroke of the scraper arm 57 which is provided with projecting rollers 69 and springs 71 for drawing the scraper onto the drum. A lever 73, pivoted at 74 and provided with rollers 77 is brought into contact with a ratchet wheel 76 by means of a spring 78 and the rotation of the wheel causes the projection of the ratchet to impinge on the rollers 77 to vibrate the lever so that a hammer 72 on the latter strikes the hopper 68 and dislodges any material adhering to the sides. The roller 40 is adjustable relatively to the drum by a screw 37 which works against the pressure of a spring 38 and the scraper 45 is adjustable by a screw 46 which is rotated by a shaft 49. The material from the container 20 is fed onto the drum where it is compressed by the roller 40 and the thickness adjusted by the scraper 45. During clockwise rotation of the crank 60, the rollers 69 contact with the rim 1<a> of the drum and raise the scraper during the lower half revolution and during the top half revolution the scraper descends onto the periphery of the drum and is rapidly withdrawn to the position shown in the Figure where it is discharged into the hopper 68 to fall into a receptacle 56 which may be a bag, tin &c. placed in position at each discharge. Two drums may be used to fill one bag &c., the bag being moved from one drum to the other to catch the discharged material. The bottom 42 of the container 20 is adjustable toward the periphery of the drum.
