Abstract
310,961. Miller, W. J. May 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Extrusion machines; flower-pot machines ; heating apparatus.-Consists in periodically moving a mould into co-operative relation with an upper die, applying a charge of clay under pressure to the surface of the mould, and applying air or other fluid under pressure through the walls of the die-with or without the application of subatmospheric pressure to the mould-to ensure adhesion of the clay to the mould and its release from the die when the parts are separated. As shown, moulds A, supported by members B on a chain conveyer, are raised to co-operate with an upper die 129 and are charged with material by a plunger P working in a chamber 73 extending from an extrusion chamber. The plunger P is carried by a hollow rod 118 having a fluid connection 128 and reciprocated bv a cam 114 and lever 115. The die 129 is lined with plaster and is furnished with a fluid connection 133. The mould is supported by a. telescopic hollow stem 10, 11, also having a fluid connection controlled by a valve 66, which stem is reciprocated by a cam 52 and lever 53. Rotation may be imparted to the mould through friction gearing 14, 13 controlled by a camoperated brake 54. The mould may be associated with a magnetic chuck and the upper die may be furnished with an electrical heating device, the appropriate connections being made by rings on the stem 11 and contacts 176. Fig. 4 shows the extrusion chamber 72 furnished with a feed screw 75 driven intermittently through ratchet gear and fitted with a relief valve 96. A threaded portion 79 on the spindle 77 prevents access of material to the bearing 78 and is associated with a scraper 80<a>. Various forms of mould are described; also adjusting means for the levers 53, 115 and cams 52, 114. The charged moulds pass, in turn, to a profile 185 associated with a trimmer 193 and sponge 200. Specifications 283,151; 283,894, [Class 87 (i), Bricks &c.] : 284,696, 293,023, 308,836 and 309,491 are referred to.
