Abstract

Rotary furnaces. - The joint between the body portion of a rotary furnace and the fixed end plates is made by a gland having fixed and moving bearing- surfaces between which steam or other gas is delivered. As shown in Fig. 3, the body portion 11 of the furnace carries a renewable sectional ring 25 having a machined bearing- surface 26, while the non-rotatable end plate 20 is machined on its periphery and carries a one-piece cast iron sealing-ring 27, which is yieldingly pressed into contact with the bearing surface 26 by adjustable pressure rods 37. Steam grooves 29, 30 are cut in the bearing-faces of the ring 27, the former being of sinuous form to prevent uneven wear of the face 26. Each pressure rod 37 is screwed into a slide block 36 guided by rods united at their outer ends by a yoke 35. Escape of steam is minimized by asbestos packing 41, and in a modification this packing is interposed between the ring 27 and a second undercut ring, on which the rods 37 bear. Charging and discharging.-The devices for feeding and discharging material without allowing access of air may be similar, and may each consist either of a shoot with two alternately-operated bells, or as shown in Fig. 5 of a shoot with two partitions 42, 43, above and below which operate scraper arms 51, and apertured valve discs 50 carried by a rotary shaft 48. The discharge hood of the furnace is slidably connected to the discharge shoot and is pressed into contact with the furnace by a weighted bell-crank lever. At this end of the furnace the sealing-ring 27 is fixed to the hood. At the charging end the feed shoot 54, Fig. 8, may carry a sealing plate 72 which co-operates with a similar plate 73 on the end of the furnace. The space between the plates 72, 73 and the end plate 20 is filled with steam either direct through the connection 74, or by leakage from the joint.
