Abstract

308,746. Dehn, F. B., (Martin-Colvin Co.). Dec. 28, 1927. Spray evaporators; separate heater and evaporator apparatus.-In the recovery of salt from salt solutions used in cooling exhaust steam from turbines &c. by spraying the brine into the atmosphere to form a mist above a pond containing the solution, the temperature of the mist is maintained above the dew point of the atmosphere by controlling the amount of air coming into contact with the mist, e.g. by providing shuttered frames round the sides of the pond. Exhaust steam from a turbine 10 is cooled in a condenser 12 by circulating therethrough brine from tanks or ponds 26, 29 which may be employed together or separately. The ponds are surrounded by frames 90 carrying shutters 91 operated by rods 92 so as to control access of air to the mist above the tanks. The heated brine is sprayed into the tank 26 through a manifold 22 the diameter of which is gradually reduced towards its outer free ends to equalize the pressures in the spray arms 24. A similar manifold 28 is provided over the tank 29. The cooled brine in the tanks is re- - turned to the condenser by a pump 48 through valve-controlled pipes 34, 35. The pipe 34, Fig. 3, has a check valve 39 which prevents return of liquid to the tank and terminates at the wall 42 of the tank adjacent the open end 43 of a pipe 44 which in turn is joined to a pipe 64 running along the bottom of the tank and provided with a slit 67 through which the brine is sucked drawn by the suction in the pipe 34. The concentration of the solution may be changed by admitting fresh brine or water through pipes 52, 50, respectively. The tank 26, Fig. 2, is formed with sloping slides 68, 82 and a channel 63 which is extended upwardly through the side wall 68 to form a. housing for a travelling carrier 73 which removes the crystals. The bottom of the tank is formed with a number of parallel grooves 63 separated by walls 80 and containing endless bands with projecting fins for collecting the crystals on the carrier 73.
