Abstract

308,667. Waddell, M., and Watson, H. C. Sept. 17, 1927. Breaking and scutching apparatus; heckling- machines; rippling-apparatus; retting.-Unretted flax, hemp, or jute is clamped in holders B and is passed along vertically reciprocating channels to be treated by a series of devices which will remove the seeds and crush and remove the woodv material. The devices comprise two or more sets of fluted rollers C, C', two or more sets of slotted plates D, consisting of two fixed plates and a central reciprocating plate, and two or more sets of scutching-devices E. Sets of heckle sheets may be added, and drying chambers may be provided before the fluted rollers. The machine comprises two sides A, A' in which the two ends of the material are treated, and cross channels A<2>, one of which serves as a filling end, and the other of which is provided with screwing- mechanism for the holders and pull through mechanism for the flax &c. The rollers C, C' are reversed as the flax falls and rises with the channel and are driven to give the necessary slack in the straw. They may be arranged to roll one over another, or may have a longitudinal reciprocating motion. Two or more pairs one above the other may be provided. A set of rubbing- plates may be arranged below the rollers. The scutching-devices E may have blades of the propeller type or blades fixed on a drum e. The blades may be straight or spiral. If desired the material from the machine may be conveyed to a retting, boiling, or bleaching vessel. The holder containing the flax &c. descends into and ascends from the tank, and the stalks are then passed between rollers in washing tanks. The hanging material is sucked downwards in the tanks by propellers revolving in the liquids. The retting may be effected by a ferment as described in Specification 302,300, or the treated flax straw may be wound in rove form on an open reel as described in Specification 299,519. The machine is provided with stop-motions, so that sections can be thrown out of action.
