Abstract

308,326. Watts, A. Nov. 22, 1927. Totalizators.-To register a bet, a token of selected value is inserted in a ticketissuing machine, settings for the horse and win or place made, and the machine operated. A voucher showing the particulars is then issued and a punched or an electrical registration effected. As shown, the machine is capable of receiving bets of three values and after the token has been inserted, the corresponding value pointer 11-13 is moved to the right or left to register the kind of bet, and a numeral dial 6 is turned to the number of the horse. The tokens are differentiated so that they can be inserted only in the right position on a slide 1 when this is drawn out by means of its handle 2. When the slide is returned the token releases a corresponding rack 27-29 conveying the movement of the pointer 11-13 to the type sector 30-32. The horse number type may also be set by rack-and-pinion gear 17, 18, 19. The slide 1 is next rotated through 180‹ to give one rotation to a cam shaft 43 controlling the printing and recording operations. The slide can be turned only when ful'y pushed in owing to a key and keyway 93 and moreover it cannot be turned unless a token is present, a catch 95 engaging the key-way except when the rack-releasing mechanism has been operated. To prevent fraud the token-receiving portion of the slide may be interchangeable to facilitate the use of different sets of tokens on different days. During the operation a resetting blade 101 restores the displaced rack 27-29 and pointer 11-13 to normal position and a pawl 98 ensures the dislodgment of the token from the slide. Voucher. printing and issuing.-The voucher strip passes between a platen 50 and an ink-ribbon overlying the type wheel 20 and type-sectors 30-32 and is fed out through a slot 58. The platen is operated by a cam 62 on the shaft 43, and, after impression, a toothed sector is reciprocated to rotate the voucher-strip feed rollers and actuate a scissor blade. Recording.-The operations of the machine may be recorded by punching on a strip which may be subsequently analysed and the results transmitted electrically to the central station. For this purpose a record-strip is traversed across two groups of punches, of which the left-hand six in Fig. 2 correspond with the settings of the pointers 11-13 while the remaining twenty-four are controlled by the horse dial 6. The former punches are selected by arms 78-80 carried respectively by the racks 27-29 and the horsenumber punch-selecting arm 84 is on the rack 18. The punches are operated by a plate 83 mounted on cam-actuated arms 86. The punches may be replaced by circuit closers and the registrations effected electrically at the central station simultaneously with the ticket-issuing operation. Registering electrically at a distance.-This may be effected by the use of batteries of electromagnets having vertical and horizontal loop windings as in Specification 280,654, [Class 35, Dynamo-electric generators &c.], the various horizontal and vertical windings of the groups and banks being connected with the contacts of the ticket-issuing machine or the analysing machine. According to the Provisional Specification different token-receiving slides may be provided for place and win bets and for the various wager units. The tickets issued may be printed in distinctive colours according to their value by the use of vari-coloured ink-ribbon.
