Starting. - In an engine having the exhaust cam 3 and braking-cams 9, 10 tapered towards each other and overlapping so as to cause a gradual changeover to braking when the cams are moved axially from position I to position IV, a compression-relief cam 8 comes into action at position II, and this also serves to modify the braking action.
