Aluminium and other metallic chlorides.-The production of anhydrous metallic chlorides by treating metallic oxides with carbon monoxide and chlorine is carried out by first passing the gas mixture over a catalyst such as animal charcoal which promotes the formation of phosgene, and the reacting materials are protected against loss of heat, as by effecting the reaction in an insulated shaft furnace, so that heat need be supplied only for starting the reaction. By mixing the initial material with coal and using a sufficiently high temperature for the reaction, carbon monoxide for further use in the process may be recovered from the issuing gases. Examples relate to the production of aluminium chloride from kaolin, or from a mixture of bauxite with coke; in the former case the process is carried out continuously in a shaft furnace, the gas mixture being supplied in countercurrent to the solid material.
