Abstract

307,187. Glascodine, R. T., McDermid, W. F., and Spencer, A. Feb. 9, 1928. Addition to 285,209. Fluid-pressure.-The valve device for automatic vacuum brakes described in the parent Specification is provided with an opening between the brake cylinder and the valve piston chamber which is controlled by a valve in a similar manner to the opening between the piston chamber and the train pipe so as to ensure a uniform rate of flow of air from the brake cylinder during release as well as to the brake cylinder during application irrespective of the pressure difference as between the train-pipe and the brake cylinder. The train-pipe 9 and brake cylinder pipe 10 communicate with the piston chamber 1 through openings 3, 2, respectively, controlled by shoulders 5, 4 on the piston stem 6<a>. The piston 6 has openings 7 providing a restricted passage for air through the piston. A spring 8 abuts through washers 13 on the heads of pins 12. upon which the piston stem 6<a> can slide. The washers also engage shoulders formed within the piston stem. During application, if the train-pipe pressure together with the weight of the piston is sufficient to overcome the spring 8 and the brake cylinder pressure, the piston moves downwardly to restrict more or less the passage 3 and thus the rate at which the air flows into the brake cylinder. Similarly in releasing the brake if the excess of the brake cylinder pressure over the trainpipe pressure is sufficient to overcome at first the weight of the piston and subsequently also the resistance of the spring 8, the shoulder 4 throttles the flow of air from the brake cylinder to the train-pipe. The upper stem 12 may, like the lower stem, normally contact with the casing, but to render the device more sensitive, in the release action, in view of the fact that the upward movement of the piston is opposed by the weight thereof, the upper stem may as shown be normally spaced from the casing so that the spring is not at first effective.
