Pipe and reed organs; stop and coupler actions. -For the synthetic production of various tone qualities by sounding together as one note pipes or reeds of harmonically related pitch, these are so voiced as to be as free as possible from overtones. Thus flue pipes or spherical resonators may be used on low pressure wind; or reeds may be provided with resonators. The separate registers in such instruments thus differ only in intensity and pitch, the pipes in each register being tuned in equal temperament, while the pitch relations between the registers may be the just intervals, especially the natural thirds, or the tempered intervals. The number of pipes may be further reduced by enclosing individual ranks or groups of ranks in separate swell-boxes, and also by the adoption of the extension system. The synthetic tones thus produced may however be used in conjunction with those of pipes or reeds of ordinary voicing. The system may also be applied to ranks of pipes of which the tone changes from one part to another, as described in Specification 218,252. An action is described and illustrated in which a wind chest has two sets of ducts at right angles, one set connected to the key-valves and the other set connected to the pipe-valves, the ducts being connected by apertures controlled by diagonally-arranged stop-slides so that pipes of harmonically related pitch in each rank may be sounded together in various combinations; the apertures are provided with non-return valves.
