Abstract

Alarms, for parts of machinery, operated by expansion and evaporation of liquids.-The cooling system of an internal combustion engine is provided with a combination device comprising a heat sensitive element, which indicates the temperature of the cooling fluid, and a pressureresponsive device for operating a danger signal when the fluid boils. As shown, the device is mounted as a unit 21 in the return pipe 12 between the engine 16 and radiator 11. Within the device 21 is a chamber 23 enclosing a bulb 25 communicating, by means of a capillary tube 29, with an indicator 44 which has a pointer 46 and temperature scale 45. The chamber 23 communicates by a pipe 41 with the vapour space 16 of the radiator, and by a tube 33 with the interior of an expansible capsule 32. The latter carries a contact 36 adapted to co-operate with an adjustable contact 37 arranged in an electrical circuit which includes a source of current and a signal lamp 42. When the cooling fluid boils, its vapour pressure expands the capsule and closes the lamp circuit, whilst the temperature of the fluid is at all times indicated on the scale 45.
