Abstract

305,549. Telford, A. E., and Hyde, A. Nov. 1, 1927. Road-traffic signals on vehicles.- A direction-indicating arrow is given a flickering appearance when a hand-switch is closed, by reason of a shutter which is eleetromagnetically caused to vibrate. Further, when the foot or hand brake is actuated the red tail light is changed to show an illuminated stencil "stop." Each signal arm 3, 4 has an arrowshaped opening 7, 8 formed by transparent windows behind each of which is a stationary plate 9 having vertical slots 10. Behind the plate 9 is a slidable plate 11 carrying an armature 16 aud having vertical strips of the same colour as the intervals between the slots 10. Between these strips are louvres 12, the front faces of which are silvered. Normally the parts are as shown in Fig. 2, but when the driver closes a switch to R or L, Fig. 4, a magnet 15 or 15a is energized to operate the appmpriate plate 11 against its spring 17. As the circuit includes an interrupter 18 of known form, the plate 11 vibrates and gives the arrow a flickering appearance. Between the arms 3, 4 is a housing 5 having a lamp 19 adapted to shine through an opening 20 on each side on to the arrows 7, 8 and to shine through a lower operation 21 on to the number plate of the car. A stationary member 13 and a movable member 14 behind it are. of such grid-like, formation that in their normal positions they provide a red circle for the lamp to shine through; this gives the tail light; but when 14 is moved this circle disappears and the stencilled work " Stop " takes its place. The member 14 is moved by the armature lever 23 of a magnet 22 operated from the brake contacts 24. The lamp 19 is also in this circuit, but may also be constantly alight at night.
