Abstract

303,488. Motosacoche Soc. Anon. Jan. 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Force-transmitting mechanism.-A mechanical control device for example for the front and rear brakes of a motor vehicle comprises an operative element adapted to move simultaneously two movable elements, the elements being held in engagement with one another, and if the resistance opposing the movement of the members exceeds a certain value they may be displaced one with relation to the other. Sleeves f, g freely mounted on a shaft a and connected respectively by arms i, k to the front and rear wheel brakes of a motor vehicle are provided with helicoidal edges d, e held in engagement by a spring m connecting arms j, l on the sleeves, with the corresponding edges of a cam c fixed on the shaft a. The shaft a and the sleeves are turned as a whole until the resistance to the rotation of a sleeve or sleeves is sufficient to overcome the spring m and cause sliding instead of rotary movement of this sleeve or the sleeves. The sliding movement of the sleeves may be used to control other members for example a couple gear connecting the motor to the wheels. A bowden cable of which the sheath is connected to the arm i and the cable to the arm k is used for this purpose. In a modification a plurality of sleeves are freely mounted on a fixed shaft and held in engagement with one another by compression springs mounted between the ends of the sleeves and collars on the sfaft. The device is operated by an arm on one of the intermediate sleeves. In a modification Fig. 3 a cam 9 is rigid with a fixed shaft 8 and a sleeve 10 is engaged therewith, a further sleeve 11 engaging the sleeve 10. A spring 17 contained in a space between the shaft 8 and the sleeves tends to hold the cam 9 and the sleeve 11 apart. The sleeves and the cam engage each other by faces in the form of inclines of special form and the brakes which are connected to arms 22, 23 on the sleeves 10, 11 are applied by a pivoted arm 19 bearing on the end of the sleeve 11. If the resistance opposed to the rotation of the sleeve 10 is sufficiently great it remains stationary and the sleeve 11 slides upon it if the resistance to rotation of the sleeve 10 is less the two sleeves turns together. The springs may be substituted by a fluid pressure piston.
