Abstract

302,038. Pullin, C. G., and Groom, S. L. Nov. 23, 1927. Laminated springs: - A shackle for a motorcycle spring fork or other vehicle spring suspension comprises a strip of steel doubled over a mandrel and folded back on itself, the two portions being welded or otherwise joined together. In the lower shackle of a spring fork, as shown, the strip is bent at 2 midway in its length around a mandrel to a circular section, and the two parts 3, 4 pressed together and spot-welded at 8 to form a flat web 7, the rear portion 6 being also bent to a circular section and the edges 9 welded together. The side edges 10 may also be welded together, or may be welded to stiffening-links 11. The flat web 7 may be stamped with stiffening ribs or corrugations 12, or with holes for lightness &c. The circular rear part 6 may be cut away at 14 to receive the bosses on the fork crown, and the circular front part 5 may be cut away at 17 for the passage of the spring attachment, which is secured to the shackle pin. The tubular parts 5, 6 and the side links 11 are fitted with bushes 15, preferably detachable, for the shackle pins. In a modification, the links 11 are stamped with apertures so that they can be passed over the edges of the shackle before being welded &c. in position.
