Emulsions, making.-In the manufacture of flexible floor, wall, &c. coverings, the coating materials, i.e., fillers and binding materials, are brought into a state of colloidal suspension or emulsion in a liquid dispersing medium, preferably water. The colloidal solutions or emulsions are then mixed, and the colloids coagulated, for example, by adding electrolytes or by passage of a current. The coagulated mass is then freed from the dispersing medium, and used for making the covering. The usual binding means such as oxidized oils may be used, or alternatively other insoluble binders such as rubber or asphalt. When latex is used as a. binder, a, vulcanizing agent in colloidal form is added: in the case of asphalt, softeners may be added. In making linoleum, cork or woodmeal in finely divided form is brought into aqueous colloidal suspension in a solution of soap, glue or other emulsifying agent. Other fillers and colouring matters used, such as barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, lithopone and china clay, may also be brought into colloidal suspension. Solutions of salts, such as barium chloride or alum, or acids such as hydrochloric or acetic acid may be used as coagulants. In an example, 50 litres of a colloid emulsion containing 25 per cent of linoxyn and 5 per cent of resin are mixed with 100 litres of an aqueous colloid suspension of 10 kilograms of cork meal, 10 kilograms of china clay, and 10 kilograms of ochre with 0.5 kilogram of glue as emulsifying agent. The emulsion of linoxyn and resin may be prepared by dissolving in a solvent, for example acetic acid, and pouring the solution into water. When the emulsion and suspensions are mixed, the whole is coagulated while being stirred. Most of the water is removed by filtration, and the mass is dried and made into floor covering in a press or otherwise. In the case of rubber latex, colloidal sulphur is added in the proportion of 5 parts to 100 parts of rubber. A small quantity of accelerator, for example diphenyl urea, in colloidal solution may be added. The final product may then be heated to effect vulcanization. Floor and other coverings produced by this method may be made without textile backing.
