Dehydrated organic compounds, catalytic production of.-Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons having the same number of carbon atoms as the initial material are made by treating hydrocarbons or mixtures of hydrocarbons of low or medium boiling point at raised temperature with catalysts consisting substantially of active charcoal. Various kinds of active charcoal are suitable, such as wood charcoal prepared with the acid of zinc chloride; brown-coal coke activated with steam, or active charcoal made from lignite rich in humus; or masses containing active charcoal may be used, such as charcoal impregnated with metals or their compounds, or masses made from metal compounds of organic acids such as iron or zinc humate. When " multiply unsaturated " hydrocarbons are to be produced, the process may be operated in several stages. Other gases or vapours may be passed over the contact mass together with the hydrocarbon treated, and normal, increased, or decreased, pressure may be employed. The process may be applied to hydrocarbons such as are obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of coal, carbonaceous substances, mineral oils or their products. The products, especially the multiply unsaturated hydrocarbons may be polymerized into products similar to rubber. In an example the vapour of pentane is passed at. 450-500‹ C. over active charcoal prepared by treating brown-coal coke with steam at 800-900‹ C.
