Abstract

Aug. 9, 1928, Fixed-abutment type with oscillating vanes; working-fluid supply.-A piston member 5 which oscillates between casing abutments 15, 16 is mounted in bearings in the casing 12 and the casing is free to rotate in external bearings 48. Power is transmitted from the piston member to coaxial shafts 1. 2. to drive the propelling device for water craft described in Specification 273,226, [Class 114, Ships &c., Propelling &c.], and the casing is furnished with heavy masses 13, 14 so that the impetus received by it from an explosion in one chamber can be used in compressing an explosive mixture in another chamber. The working chambers are circular in crosssection and are formed half in the rotor and half in the casing. Inlet is by way of valves 55 and ports 36 and outlet by way of ports 38 and expanding tubes 41, 42. The casing is cooled by air drawn through the passages 47, 40 by the ejector action of the exhaust on the orifices of pipes 50, 51. In each stroke, ports 44 in the rotor register with the outlet ports 38 and cooling air thereby passes along the centre of the rotor trunnions 3 and through the hollow rotor. A modification is arranged for using steam. The oscillations of the rotor are transmitted differentially to the shafts 1, 2 by means of two crowns of flexible rods 19, 20 carried by the rotor which are engaged by perforations in two sleeves 21, 22 splined to the shafts 1, 2. In starting the motor, both sleeves are withdrawn to the free ends of the rods 19, 20 and subsequently the water craft is driven one way or the other according to which of the sleeves 21, 22, being moved towards the roots of the rods 19, 20 transmits the greater oscillations.
