Abstract

299,956. Weitz, E. A. Sept. 15, 1927. Syringes.-A syringe for injecting liquid into, and positively withdrawing it from, cavities of the body or for irrigating wounds by a similar action comprises inner and outer cylinders 13, 14 communicating at 16a and connected at their lower ends with inner and outer nozzles 25, 21 for application to the body.. The cylinder 13 contains a piston 15, and a hit- and-miss disc valve 17 opened by the action of screwing on the nozzle 21 is provided at the lower end of the annular space between the cylinders. In use the cylinders are filled with rinsing liquid by manipulating the piston 15, a vent aperture 34 in the syringe cover being suitably opened and. closed for this purpose. The aperture 34 is then closed, as by a rubber tube having a pinchcock, and, the instrument being inserted into a body cavity, the liquid is circulated backwards and forwards therethrough by operating the piston 15, a small annular space 26 being provided for passage of the liquid between the nozzles 21, 25. In a modified construction lift valves are provided. in the piston 15 and in a partition in the cylinder 13 whereby the liquid is caused to circulate in one direction oniy. The nozzles shown comprise a conical centre member 21 and a long inner tube 25 having a rinsing head 28 closed at its end 29 and provided with backwardly pointing lateral passages 32. Alternatively the rinsing head may comprise a dished member spaced from the tube 25 by apertured supports and having a central aperture permitting the withdrawal of air from the cavity. The nozzles 21, 25 may be replaced by other nozzles, applicable for rinsing particular parts of the body and attachable by screwing to the member 14 as at 20. A vaginal nozzle comprises inner and outer tubes, the outer tube having a terminal enlargement and the space between the tube having a. helical baffle to produce a whirling effect in the injected liquid. A nozzle for rinsing wounds or the eye comprises concentric cones, this nozzle also having a helical baffle. For the rectum a nozzle having parallel inlet and outlet passages, and for the nose a bifurcated nozzle of similar construction are provided- Nozzles similar to those shown but adapted forrinsing the urethra and the ear are also described.
