Abstract

299,834. Wallis, D. Aug. 2, 1927. Guards, controlling.-Sewing and like machines are provided with a guard which is connected to the mechanism in such a way that when the guard is in inoperative position the machine cannot be driven. The invention is described as applied to a needle guard. In the form shown in Figs. 2, 4, 7, the guard 1, hinged to the block 2, has a stud 6 engaged by the shank of a trigger 5. When the trigger is pulled down, a slot 5a in its shank registers with the stud and allows a spring- pressed member 4 to flick open the guard and return the trigger to the withdrawn position, Fig. 7. The trigger is connected by a Bowden wire 7 to a pivoted plate 8 in the casing 9 so that when the trigger is retracted to release the guard, the plate rocks into a slot in the needle bar, Fig. 4, and prevents actuation of the machine. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the wire 7 rocks a lever 13 to press out a stud 14 to prevent the disc 16 making a clutch-drive connection with the driving disc 17. When the lever 13 is rocked, a cranked lever 18 is permitted to rock under the action of its spring 19 to reciprocate a plate 21 to lock the stud 14 in position for preventing the driving of the machine. When the guard is restored to operative position, the lever 13, crank 18, and plate 21 are restored to the position for permitting the discs 16, 17 to engage to drive the machine.
