Abstract

299,604. Turner, B., and Ferr¾-Arc Welding Co., Ltd. Oct. 19, 1927. Uniting by fusion.-An electrode or rod for use in the fusion welding of alloys by the metallic-arc, carbon-arc, oxy acetylene or other welding processes comprises a case of iron or steel or consisting largely thereof, round which is wound, preferably in open spirals, a wire of nickel so as to deposit in the weld an alloy containing iron and nickel. The nickel wire may contain chromium or the spaces between the turns may be filled with a paste or powder containing chromium or ferro-chromium. The paste &c. may also contain powdered fluorspar and limestone and a binder such as sodium silicate. A small quantity of deoxidizing agent such as powdered aluminium may also be added. An outside coating may then be applied consisting of fluorspar, limestone and sodium carbonate together with a binding agent such as sodium silicate. The filling mixture may consist of 200 parts by weight of powdered chromium, 21 parts of aluminium, 35 parts of fluorspar, 15 parts of limestone and 6 parts of sodium silicate and the coating mixture may consist of 70 parts of fluorspar, 30 parts of limestone, 5 parts of sodium carbonate and 6 parts of sodium silicate. The ingredients of the welding rod may be proportioned to deposit an alloy sold commercially under the registered trade mark " Staybrite," which contains approximately 8 per cent of nickel and 18 per cent of chromium. Specifications 119,096, 204,871 and 293,283 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the core and the wire wound thereon may be made of alloys of the two metals to be deposited in different proportions. Further, a number of wires of different composition may be wound on the core.
