Order apparatus. - The weight of a chain or like flexible member resting on a supporting member is varied in proportion to a displacement representing the measurement of a quantity and the consequent movements of the supporting member are indicated by an electric instrument, which may be situated at a distance. In the apparatus shown, the movements of a gas-holder cause a variation in the length of a chain 15 supported in a receptacle 17 carried by a number of floats 18 arranged on cylinders 19 which contain mercury or other conducting liquid and are all connected by a pipe 24 with a cylinder 25. The liquid level in the cylinder 25 is consequently varied in proportion to the displacement of the gas-holder and the change of liquid level is indicated by an ammeter 31 arranged in circuit with a resistance element 27 wound on a core. 26 in the cylinder 25.
