Abstract

298,175. Martin, H. E. July 1, 1927. Stream-cutting machines. -Relates to caramel cutting and wrapping machines, such, for instance, as are described in Specifications 215,902, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], and 223,708. The caramel material 2<a> is fed and shaped by two rollers 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 2, intermittently rotated by an arm 4 and Geneva stop motion 3 and gears 49 - - 51, and is passed along a channel 9. A constantly rotating knife 10 severs a portion, which is thrust, with a wrapper, through guides 19, 20 into the recess 21 of an operating arm 22 by a pusher 18 in such a position that the cut ends are at right angles to the surface engaged by the pusher. The pusher member is pivoted at 23 on an arm 24 which is positively moved in each direction by cams 26, 30. The operating arm 22 descends past a guide 53 which folds up the outstanding portion of the wrapper and the caramel is ejected into a holder 32 adjacent to a pair of continuously rotating gripping devices 33 for twisting the ends of the wrapper. The jaws 34, 35 of the devices are open when the ejection of the caramel into the holder takes place, being opened against the action of springs 62 by levers 36 acting on rack bars 61 co-operating with gears 60 on the jaws. The levers 36 move outwards to allow the jaws to close upon the projecting ends of the wrapper during the twisting operation, and the action of the levers is adjustable by means of locking nuts 38 so that the wrapper is allowed to slip during the twisting to compensate for lateral movement and to obviate mounting the jaws to reciprocate longitudinally.
