Abstract

297,590. Fieldhouse, W. J. Nov. 9, 1927. Moulding tyres; extrusion machines.-The outer covering of a cushion tyre is applied to and moulded over the previously formed core by an extrusion process, which also shapes the exterior to its finished form. The core is passed through a tube 8 and non- rotating nose-piece 15 at the end of the screw 7 and emerges close to the shaping die 17 where it is surrounded by the covering material received from the hopper 5<a> and forced along by the screw. Three equally-spaced set screws 21 allow the member 15 to be set so as to position the core unsymmetrically in the finished tyre, for example, to secure a thicker covering over the tread portion. The compression of the covering-material by the screw causes the core to be fed along the tube automatically after the initial hand feed to establish contact therewith.
