Abstract

297,082. Clark, J. B. Sept. 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Lubricant conveyed by fluid.-A lubricating device for an internalcombustion engine comprises a pipe 10 connected to the intake manifold B and, through a control valve 15, to a tube 24 depending into a lubricant receptacle D which may be the can in which lubricant is ordinarily sold, a wick 32 being arranged in the tube to extend below the lower end thereof and the tube being formed with an aperture 34 located below the upper end of the wick and slightly below the top of the receptacle. When the receptacle is full, a relatively large quantity of lubricant is drawn from the receptacle through the hole 34 and the wick into the manifold B, but, when the level of lubricant falls below the hole, air is drawn therethrough and carries with it a small quantity of lubricant from the wick. The tube 24 is secured to a cap 25 adapted to be screwed on to the neck d of the receptacle D. the comparatively loose connection between the cap and neck permitting the entry of air into the receptacle. A projection on the cap 25 screws into an enlargement 22 at the lower end oi the casing 12 of the valve 15. The receptacle is held in position by a bracket 28 secured to the dashboard 27 and having an arm 29 held between the members 22, 25 and a toe 30 adapted to engage the bottom seam of the receptacle. The operating arm 20 of the valve 15 is connected by a wire 36 passing through a guide tube 38 to the rod c' operating the thrcttle valve c, the connection being such that the valve 15 is closed when the throttle is nearly closed, reaches its maximum opening when the throttle is partly open, and is again closed when the throttle is wide open.
