Abstract

296,685. Anode Rubber Co., Ltd., (Klein, P., and Szegvßri, A.). March 4, 1927. Emulsions, making.-Aqueous dispersions of substances such as vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber, rubber waste, rubber reclaim, rubber substitutes, synthetic resins, balata or gutta percha, or mixtures of such substances, are prepared by bringing the material mechanically into plastic condition and adding successively thereto two reagents forming by mutual reaction a substance facilitating dispersion. Examples of the invention are as follow :-(1) To factis, worked in a masticator until plastic, 5-10 per cent of oleic acid is added with stirring. Ammonia water of about 6 per cent strength is then stirred gradually into the mass to produce the dispersion, which is at first of the water-dispersed type but which suffers a change of phase on further dilution. (2) To 1 kg. of tyre reclaim, rendered plastic in a masticator or between mixing rollers, 60 gms. of commercial oleic acid is gradually added with stirring. 96 gms. of 20 per cent caustic soda are then slowly added followed by 425 c.c. of 6 per cent ammonia water. The dispersion is inverted at this stage and is then diluted with 1.5 litres of 1 per cent ammonia water containing, if desired, dispersing agents or protective colloids. Rubber compounding ingredients, protective colloids or materials such as asphalts, bitumens, mineral rubbers, cellulose esters or viscose may be added to the plastic mass before dispersion. Dispersions of any of the above substances mav serve as the final diluting medium or may be added to the dispersion when completed.
