Hydrocarbons, cracking. - In a process for cracking oils by passing them through a bath of molten metal, from which the cracked products are passed to an asphalt separator before they enter the usual dephlegmators and condensers, the crude oils are freed from impurities such as resins, asphalts, &c. by passing them initially into the asphalt separator. Crude oil from a tank A is pumped through a heating coil H into an asphalt separator K where the lighter constituents are vapourized. The vapours pass to a dephlegmator N and the condensate obtained is pumped through a coil into a molten metal bath V. The cracked products pass to the separator K where the asphaltic impurities together with those contained in the crude oil are separated and led off through a line L. The desired lighter fractions pass from the dephlegmator N to a condenser O.
