Pistons, cooling. - To reduce the transfer of heat through the piston of an internal-combustion engine, perforated or slotted screens are integral with, or fixed a small distance away from, the face, the intervening space being in communication with the combustion chamber. The invention is particularly applicable to power plant in which the combustion products are utilized for doing worb-e.g. that described in Specification 232,278; 244,215, [Class 7 (i), Combustion-product &c. engines], or 245,541. The screens may be made of allovs of nickel and chromium or iron with additions of nickel, chromium, or tungsten. Fig. 1 shows a piston screen comprising a number of T-shaped strips 14 which are dovetailed into grooves in the piston face and fixed by a transverse screw-bolt; a circular central portion of the piston-face may be unprotected by the screen and project so as to be flush with the screen. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the screen comprises either (a) C-shaped sections 23, which are. caulked in T-shaped grooves by pieces 24, extending across the piston or comprising separate pieces having a small central portion which is a driving fit or (b) sections 23<a> which fit cylindrical grooves 27 and are retained by pins 28 having enlarged centre parts 28<a>, and fixed by screws 29; the grooves 27 may have a hard steel lining, and the sections 23, 23a may be apertured. As shown in Fig. 22, the surface 76, to be protected, has extensions 78 and grooves 77 and the screens 79 after insertion at 80 and 77 are caulked at 81. In Fig. 23, the dovetailed elements have their edges 82 turned down, for additional support, and are perforated; in Fig. 24, corrugated sides of the elements are caulked in corrugated slots 83. The inner surface of the elements may be roughened to absorb heat more readily and the walls of the piston face may be lagged with insulating material or oxidized.
