Abstract

295,177. Honacker, Y. van. Dec. 28, 1927. Helicopters; propelling; steering and balancing; emergency fittings.-A machine is supported by two oppositely rotating rings of blades, the inclinations of which can be varied cyclically by the pilot to give a forward propulsion or to steer the machine, the two rings being mounted on a central shaft which can be detached with the pilot's seat from the body when necessary to enable the supporting system to act as a parachute. In normal straight flight the blades of the two rings reach their maximum inclinations on opposite sides of the machine. The blades are mounted on radiating lattice arms 11 connected to tubular hubs 7, 8 and braced at their ends bv tension members. The blades can move radially on their supports which are provided with helically twisted members engaging rings on the blades so that the inclination of the blades is varied as they move radially. The hubs 7, 8 rotate about a column 5 which is connected by a releasable clutch 4 to the main bodv of the machine. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hub 7 is driven by an engine 2 and the hub 8 is driven by bevel gearing from the hub 7, but 'n the form shown in Fig. 2 both hubs are driven by gearing at their lower ends. A fan 26 may be provided for cooling the engine. The blades are normally pulled outwards radially by springs but are drawn in by cables 18 connected to rings 19 running around rollers 27, Fig. 5, on frames 28 capable of being displaced by a screwed shaft 34 turned by chain gearing 31 from a hand wheel 32. Where no steering rudder is provided, the shaft 34 is divided and moved by two hand wheels to enable a differential eccentering of the rings 19 to be produced for steering purposes, but the two hand-wheels can be clutched together so as to move as one. A rudder and elevator of cross-formation universally pivoted at 25 is shown in Fig. 1.
