Abstract

293,913. Lockwood, G. O. April 20, 1927. Cauldrons; tar macadam, plant for making.- Apparatus for heating old or new road material - and, if necessary, mixing it with tar, includes a pan 1 situated over a heating chamber 16 and tiltable about a shaft 4 to discharge its contents either into a mixer 21 or out of the apparatus by way of a shoot 30. The vehicular apparatus shown in Fig. 1, includes a furnace 16 with flues 18 and stack 20, a tar boiler 10 which delivers to the mixer by way of a pipe 11, and tilting measure 13, and a mixer 21 with a discharge door 23 and stirrers 22 rotated through gearing 27 by hand gear 28. The pan 1, which may be perforated, is connected by a locking bolt 7 with a second pan 6 also tiltable on the shaft 4. The pan 1 may be tilted alone by a handle 5 or in company with the pan 6, as shown. Fig. 5 shows a modified pan with a removable grating 38, the pan being protected from heat by a corrugated sheet 40. The adjustable flap 31 permits of the pan discharging either into the mixer or into the shoot 30. Two or more pans placed side by side may discharge into a single mixer or one pan may discharge into a second pan and' then into the mixer. For preparing large quantities several tipping pans may discharge into two or more mixers the paddles of which are rotated by a motor on the vehicle.
