Abstract

Materials for purifying; purifier waste, revivifying.-In separating sulphuretted hydrogen and carbon dioxide from gases by washing with alkaline lye, the lye is regenerated by treating with an iron compound such as ferric hydroxide to precipitate sulphide and with lime to precipitate calcium carbonate. The process may be rendered continuous by circulating the spent lye through a vessel containing rusted iron filings, log iron ore, &c. which is exposed to air to oxidize the iron sulphide and regenerate the hydroxide. A portion only of the sulphide-free washing liquor may be treated with lime and the alkali solution returned to the washing liquor, or the treatment with lime of the whole washing liquor may be carried out when required.
