Moving-chamber apparatus.-Powdered or other reagent is delivered in measured and regulatable quantities for water-softening purposes by means of a conveyer 6, the compartments of which receive a charge at 14 and when clear of a fixed plate 13 discharge on to the lower run, the material being finally delivered at 16. The conveyer is built up of links connected by bars 8 to form shallow compartments and the upper run passes through a tunnel formed by the casing 4 and the plate 13. Even distribution over the lower run is effected by a stationary plate 15. The chain is driven by ratchet and pawl mechanism 17, 19 from the shaft 3 of the tipping bucket or from the water wheel, and provision is made at 22, 23 for adjusting the extent of the feed movement so as to vary the amount of powder delivered at each operation. A lost-motion device. may be provided, as at 24, to ensure operation by momentum. A number of delivery units may be combined so as to be operated in unison or alternation by the one shaft 3. The reagent may be fed to a submerged tray and the bucket discharged thereon to wash the material from the tray and so effect mixing.
