Abstract

Cranklinkages; cranks and levers.-An overhead cam shaft 17 for the valve gear of internal - combustion engines is driven from the half-speed shaft 4 by means of a shaft 12, which is connected at its ends to crank pins 7 and 15 on the two shafts 4 and 17, and is mounted in a casing 14 so as to reciprocate axially and to oscillate about its axis. The ends of the shaft 12 are fitted with housings 11, 11<1> carrying members 8, 8<1> which engage the crank pins 7, 15- and are formed with vertical trunnions 9, 9<1> journaled in the housings. The crank pin 15 is formed on a block 16 capable of slight radial, play in a flange 17<1> on the cam shaft, for example as described in Speci. fication 230,555, to allow for expansion of the cylinder block. The housing 11<1> is adjustable axially of the shaft 12. Balancing-weights are provided at 25 and 26, and an additional weight may be mounted on the shaft 12. 'The shaft 4 may be arranged on the same side of the shaft 12 as the shaft 17, so that the shafts 4 and 17 rotate in the same direction, instead of in opposite directions as with the arrangement shown. The trunnion fittings may be replaced by ball joints.
